Nikki Borodi presents a soulful Vinyasa Flow class set to live music with this months featured artist Cello Joe!

Joey Chang aka CelloJoe is an anomaly in the world of cellists.

By combining cello with beatboxing, he has created a unique genre: Classical Hip Hop.

CelloJoe records live on stage with a loop pedal and produces intricate tapestries of harmony, melody, and rhythm. His beatboxing (vocal percussion) and funky cello grooves form a rich soundscape for intelligent lyrics and his music spreads love, joy, laughter and conscious vibrations.

By beatboxing, throat-singing, singing, plucking and bowing the cello, CelloJoe can mimic many styles of music from dubstep to folk to rock to classical to hip hop. CelloJoe is the world’s first long distance musical bike touring cellist. He has ridden his bike over 10,000 miles in the US, Canada, Mexico, Europe and Australia.

Creating a Meditation Practice that Lasts – with Isaak Brown

You probably already know that meditation is shown to reduce stress, regulate emotions, support focus, clarity and joy. So why don’t we all do it? If you’ve wanted to start or maintain a meditation practice, come join in this 4-part series that introduces you to an accessible meditation practice and teaches you how to practice consistently.

Many people have tried or started a meditation practice, and either don’t quite get it or find they can’t keep it up. In this series we learn the foundation of meditation practice, what it offers and how to create a practice that you’ll keep doing. We’ll practice 30 minutes of meditation with guided instructions, and have a short instruction and question and answer-period following. You are welcome to come to one or all 4 weeks of this class. Classes will build upon each other and it is recommended to take advantage of the four part series.

Isaak Brown is a coach, facilitator and educator. His teachings and practice are informed first and foremost by his body,  intuitive ground and relationship to spirit. He has been a dedicated practitioner of Vipassana meditation for over ten years, and has trained and lived in silent retreat centers in the US and Burma. Isaak is deeply passionate about sharing accessible, simple tools to connect to the truth of your nature and your authentic self.  Isaak graduated with an MA in Religious Leadership and Social Change from the Graduate Theological Union with a focus on somantics and meditation.

Symmetry Yoga and Aviva Levine are proud to present, TRE® (Tension, Stress & Trauma Release Exercise). TRE® is an innovative series of exercises that assist the body in releasing deep muscular patterns of stress, tension and trauma. Created by Dr. David Berceli, PhD, TRE® safely activates a natural reflex mechanism of shaking or vibrating that releases muscular tension, calming down the nervous system. When this muscular shaking/vibrating mechanism is activated in a safe and controlled environment, the body is encouraged to return back to a state of balance.

TRE® is based on the fundamental idea, backed by recent research, that stress, tension and trauma is both psychological and physical. TRE®’s reflexive muscle vibrations generally feel pleasant and soothing. After doing TRE®, many people report feelings of peace and well-being.

Our fast paced modern lifestyle (which runs on the adrenaline of our sympathetic nervous system) chronically triggers and tightens the psoas – making it literally ready to run, freeze or fight. A constantly contracting psoas due to stress or tension, eventually begins to shorten leading to a host of painful conditions including low back pain, sacroiliac pain, sciatica, disc problems, scoliosis, hip degeneration, knee pain, menstruation pain, infertility, and digestive complications.

This workshop will include an explanation of TRE® and a few yoga poses followed by TRE®.

Trained as a Forrest Yoga teacher under Ana Forrest and recently certified in TRE®, Aviva Levine is fascinated with the body’s ability to heal and transform. Her teaching focuses on helping others experience this evolution in themselves. She will guide you into a deeper connection with your body through a practice that is intense-yet-playful. With compassion and humor; she creates classes to help you move from struggle and limitation, towards freedom of body and mind.

Finding comfort in movement, Aviva studied; ballet, jazz, and modern dance and played competitive ultimate frisbee. After a lifetime of physical activity, multiple injuries led her to Forrest Yoga and TRE® Her classes are an offering of the incredible benefits through simple techniques to heal; chronic pain, physical and emotional trauma, and injuries.

Aviva lives in the Bay Area, and joyfully shares her ever growing bag of tricks in private and group instruction.

Introducing Gentle Yoga in Alameda CA

We are excited to announce the addition of a new class to Symmetry Yoga. This class was designed based on the needs and requests of our patients. Some Symmetry students have ailments and injuries that can temporarily prevent them from enjoying a fast pace yoga flow, but with Gentle Yoga, taught by Elena Kelly, accommodations and modifications will be made to allow for the most gentle version of yoga individualized for each students limitations.

You don’t have to have any physical obstacles to benefit from this class. Gentle yoga, is as it sounds, a gentle, calming and often invigorating version of your practice.

Elena is excited to be teaching this specialized class. She is known for her ability to shape and mold a class to individual student needs. She utilizes teaching techniques that ensure specific and deliberate yet gentle guidance. During class she enjoys playing between challenging and nurturing the body.

So whether you feel the need to give your body a little extra care or simply need a breather from the rigorous grind of life, this is the class for you. Come join us Fridays at 9am at Symmetry Yoga. We hope to see you there!

Symmetry Yoga, located inside of Symmetry Health Center Alameda is excited to announce the arrival of a fun and unique Friday night YOGA class!

Kick off your weekend with a special, LIVE MUSIC guided, ALL level yoga class that will inspire you to move through your Friday night flow with new found power and ease.

This month our live music will be offered by Heather Normandale, a singer/songwriter that has performed on all corners of the world. Her lyrics are rich, emotive, and thoughtful. Rolling rhythms of fingerpicking on the banjo, mandolin and guitar drive the melody and message of her music.

Teaching these classes will be our very own Nikki Borodi, with a 15 year practice that offers an acute understanding of how to guide students through a meaningful flow. As an added treat for our first Friday Night Flow, Nikki and gifted yogi, Glen Saunders will be opening this first class with an AcroYoga performance! Keep in mind that this will not be an AcroYoga class, so all levels and abilities are welcome to attend.

Whether you are new to your practice or have been a long time yogi, this class will invite you to deepen your experience of Vinyasa Flow. Come find the play and learn to listen to your body’s intuition of how to best move like yourself. Live music by the talented Heather Normandale with take you out of your heads and into the spirit of the sounds that will carry you through a dance on your mat. More Than a Resolution with Elena Kelly

Join Us At Symmetry Yoga in Alameda For A Special New Years Workshop

Symmetry Yoga AlamedaCreative expression and yoga asana combine to uncover and embody an authentic and empowering New Years Resolution.

Through guided journaling, and a lead ‘anything goes’ art project with easy to use watercolor paints, we will uncover a resolution that is true to YOU at your purest form.

This exercise will identify deep fears as well as blissful passions, and their relationship to one another.

In this process we will shift our thought patterns to have a conversation with our inner coach, instead of our inner critic, moving away from New Years Resolutions that devalue our current state of being, and instead, develop positive resolutions that encourage and uplift our spirits.

Following this creative reflection, an asana and meditation practice will challenge and nurture our bodies to solidify and embody these new intentions. The yoga asana practice will focus on powerful ‘big body’ postures that add confidence and determination to our resolution and path through the New Year.
